Interactions between lexical and syntactic L1-L2 overlap: Effects of gender congruency on L2 sentence processing in L1 Spanish-L2 German speakers

چکیده
Abstract Bringing together lines of research from sentence processing and lexical access, this empirical study investigates the interplay between (grammatical gender) syntactic (word order) cross-linguistic overlap in L2 German. Eighty-six L1 Spanish-L2 German thirty-six monolingual adults completed a self-paced reading task with noun phrases (NPs) manipulated by L1-L2 gender congruency (congruent, incongruent, neuter) adjective-noun word order (pre- vs. postnominal adjectives). The examines effects congruency, type mapping (i.e., presence absence each class L2), proficiency level. Results show that detection ungrammatical interacts speakers are only sensitive to violations for sentences gender-congruent nouns. ungrammaticality containing gender-incongruent nouns emerges at higher levels. These findings underscore role processing.

Predictive sentence processing in L2 and L1
There is ample evidence that native speakers anticipate upcoming information at various levels during sentence comprehension. In contrast, some studies on late second-language (L2) learners support the view that L2 learners do not anticipate information during processing, or at least, not to the same extent as native speakers do. In the current paper, I propose that native and L2 speakers are u...
متن کاملTask-effects in the L2 perception and production of English sentence types by L1 Spanish speakers
In the present paper, we investigated the acquisition of three English sentence types, statements (S), absolute yes-no questions (AQ), and declarative questions (DQ), by L1 Spanish-L2 English adult speakers. Learners of English must acquire not only the syntactic and intonational cues that distinguish AQs from DQs, but also the pragmatic distinction between the two. Participants completed two p...
متن کاملComparing L1 and L2 speakers using articulography
This study uses articulography, the measurement of the position of tongue and lips during speech, as a tool to quantitatively assess the differences between pronunciations of native and non-native (Dutch) speakers of English. In our study, we focus on two pairs of English sound contrasts: /s/-/ʃ/ and /t/-/θ/. Our analysis focuses on the anterior-posterior position of the tongue tip during the p...
متن کاملParsing Strategies in L1 and L2 Sentence Processing:
To contribute to a better understanding of L2 sentence processing, the present study examines how second language (L2) learners parse temporary ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses. Results are reported from both off-line and on-line experiments with three groups of advanced learners of Greek, with Spanish, German or Russian as native language (L1), as well as results from correspond...
متن کاملIncreasing context: L2 production of English intonation by L1 Mandarin and L1 Spanish speakers
One of the uncontested linguistic uses of intonation is the marking of sentence-type. Intonation, however, can be a redundant cue to sentence type, as in English statements or absolute yes-no questions, or the only cue, as in declarative questions. We explore the realization of sentence prosody by advanced Spanish and Mandarin learners of English. Since the target-like realization of sentence p...
